CBHS can only pay benefits to members for services administered by Recognised Providers. Find out which providers are recognised here
Before booking an appointment for a service or treatment that you plan to claim for under your CBHS Extras Cover (such as Acupuncture or Physiotherapy) make sure the provider you've chosen is recognised by CBHS. CBHS can only pay benefits for services provided by Recognised Providers.
On this page you will find information about the types of providers that are recognised, and the services for which they are considered to be Recognised Providers.
Please note, some Recognised Providers are also members of the CBHS Choice Network. In addition to paying benefits, these providers may reduce or remove gap payments for selected Extras services. To find out about the CBHS Choice Network, please click here.
If your provider is registered with Medicare Australia for services that are payable under our Extras cover, they are considered a Recognised Provider by CBHS.
CBHS Extras Cover can include services by the following registered providers:
If your provider is registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for services that are payable under CBHS Extras cover, they are considered to be a recognised provider by CBHS.

CBHS recognises many complementary and alternative therapy associations and boards as either meeting or exceeding CBHS' criteria for recognised providers. Providers that belong to these associations and/or boards are deemed to be recognised providers.
CBHS' Recognition Criteria includes:
In addition, Rule 10 of the Private Health Insurance (Accreditation) Rules 2011 applies to complementary or alternative providers. This rule requires the provider or treatment to meet each of the following criteria.
(i) Massage therapies:
(ii) Oriental Therapies
The following services are outside the scope of Rule 10 of the Private Health Insurance (Accreditation) Rules 2011 (as above) but must meet CBHS Recognition Criteria in order for benefits to be payable.
CBHS, as a health insurer, does not recommend practitioners to members and does not participate in the clinical relationship between member and provider. CBHS is not responsible for clinical outcomes for services provided or not provided by recognised providers. The extent of CBHS' responsibility, as a health insurer, is to determine whether to pay or not to pay fund benefits. In doing so, CBHS acts in accordance with the CBHS Health Benefit Fund Rules and the applicable Government regulations.
If you have any questions about a provider that you wish to use, or wish to find out more about the process of becoming a recognised provider with CBHS, contact Member Care on 1300 654 123 or send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
